AREAS AFFECTED: Cascade Foothills of Marion and Linn Counties; Cascades of Marion and Linn Counties

DESCRIPTION: At 440 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 8 miles southwest of Santiam Pass, or 29 miles south of Detroit, moving northwest at 30 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and half inch hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Detroit, Idanha, Tombstone Summit, Marion Forks, Upper Soda, and Santiam Junction. This includes the following highways in Oregon... U.S. Highway 20 east of Albany between mile markers 50 and 80. State Highway 22 east of Salem between mile markers 45 and 47, between mile markers 51 and 60, and between mile markers 66 and 81. State Highway 126 from McKenzie Bridge to the Santiam Highway between mile markers 1 and 11.

INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

The final form taken by a growing cumulus cloud is the cumulonimbus cloud, which is very tall and dense. The tower of a cumulonimbus cloud can soar 23 km into the atmosphere, although most commonly they stop growing at an altitude of 6 km.

Even small cumulonimbus clouds appear very large in comparison to other cloud types. They can signal the approach of stormy weather, such as thunderstorms or blizzards.

Drizzle is precipitation in the form of water droplets which are smaller than raindrops.

Drizzle is characterized by fine, gently falling droplets and typically does not impact human habitation in a negative way. The exception to this is freezing drizzle, a condition where drizzle freezes immediately upon reaching earth's surface. Freezing drizzle is still less dangerous than freezing rain, but can potentially result in hazardous road conditions.
