Special Weather Statement issued August 25 at 6:22PM MDT by NWS Albuquerque NM
AREAS AFFECTED: Eastern San Miguel County; Guadalupe County; Quay County
DESCRIPTION: At 622 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a line of strong thunderstorms extending from near Montoya to 13 miles southwest of Variadero, moving northeast at 5 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and nickel size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Newkirk and Montoya. This includes the following highways... Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 293 and 326. State Road 104 between Mile Markers 53 and 69.
INSTRUCTION: Monitor the weather situation closely and be alert for threatening weather conditions. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. Motorists can expect brief but sudden changes in visibility and ponding of water on roadways as storms move through the area.

Cumulus clouds are fluffy and textured with rounded tops, and
may have flat bottoms. The border of a cumulus cloud
is clearly defined, and can have the appearance of cotton or cauliflower.
Cumulus clouds form at low altitudes (rarely above 2 km) but can grow very tall,
becoming cumulus congestus and possibly the even taller cumulonimbus clouds.
When cumulus clouds become taller, they have a greater chance of producing precipitation.
